Ajeromi Ifelodun High School Alumni Donate Desks, Benches, and Copier to Alma Mater

Last Friday, January 17, was a memorable day for students and teachers of Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School, Olodi Apapa, Lagos. The school welcomed back its pioneer students, who graduated between 1979 and 1984, for a heartfelt reunion celebrating 40 years since they left the school.

As part of the event, the alumni donated 50 desks, 50 benches, and a photocopying machine to support teaching and learning at the school. This generous gesture underscored their gratitude and commitment to improving the institution that shaped their lives.

Presenting the items, Mr. Charles Okoh, president of the 1984 set, emphasized the importance of giving back. “There cannot be a better way of showing appreciation to the school, humanity, and to God than by coming to give back to the school,” he said.

Mr. Okoh encouraged all alumni to remain actively involved in supporting public education, noting that the responsibility of shaping future generations should not rest solely on the government. He acknowledged the free education initiative of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, which made education accessible to many of his peers. “But for the wonderful programme of free education of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), many of us would not have been able to go to school. Therefore, there cannot be a better way to show appreciation than by coming back to say thank you,” he added.

He also took a moment to honor the late pioneer principal, Mr. Laja Idowu Taiwo, and others who contributed to the school’s foundation but are no longer alive. A minute of silence was observed in their memory.

Mr. Okoh thanked his fellow alumni, particularly those in the diaspora, for their financial contributions, which exceeded ₦2 million, enabling the successful execution of the project.

In response, the school’s principal, Mr. A. Okunsanya, expressed deep gratitude for the donation. He assured the alumni that their efforts would inspire students and teachers alike, adding, “The school will continue to pray for all its old students so they can return to give back to their alma mater.”

The reunion also included an impactful session where students were advised to avoid drugs, cultism, and other negative influences prevalent in schools today.

Notable alumni present included Ikems Rosemary, Odey Margaret, Ebinum Charlotte, Adekunle Samson, Orimolade Oluyemi, and others who celebrated the day with pride and joy.

This act of generosity by the pioneer students is a shining example of how alumni can create lasting impacts in their communities, ensuring future generations enjoy better educational experiences.
