As the 2024 Batch C Stream II orientation for 2,665 Corps Members began in Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has called on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to stay committed to its mission of serving humanity and fostering national unity.
Speaking during the formal opening and swearing-in ceremony at the Gateway International Stadium Orientation Camp in Sagamu, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, highlighted the vital role the NYSC plays in Nigeria’s development.
He said, “This orientation programme is not just a ceremony. It is a foundational step in preparing you for the challenges and opportunities of your future. For us, as a government, we understand the critical importance of this programme.”
He emphasized that the NYSC equips young Nigerians with practical, social, and leadership skills essential for national progress, especially in rural communities. The governor also assured the Corps Members of his administration’s dedication to youth empowerment through various programmes designed to provide skills, knowledge, and opportunities.
Addressing the 1,106 male and 1,559 female Corps Members, Governor Abiodun urged them to adapt to the camp’s disciplined environment and build a peaceful and cooperative atmosphere.
In her welcome address, the NYSC Ogun State Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, commended the Corps Members for their participation and encouraged them to embrace the structured three-week orientation programme.
She explained, “This programme is designed to instil discipline and self-reliance in you, preparing you to face challenges during and after your service year.” Mrs. Nasamu particularly emphasized the importance of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, urging participants to learn at least two skills to achieve self-reliance and contribute to job creation.
She further expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for his continuous support for the NYSC and acknowledged the contributions of community leaders like Onyendu Michael Uba and Alhaji Rajihi Garba for their consistent assistance.
The ceremony also featured the administration of the symbolic Oath of Allegiance to the Corps Members by Ogun State Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, represented by Hon. Justice Adetokunbo Jibodu.
