Teacher who ‘assaulted three-year-old pupil’ suspended indefinitely

Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos, has indefinitely suspended a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, after a viral video showed her assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael, during a numeracy lesson. The incident, which sparked widespread outrage, led to her arrest on Wednesday.

The video, widely shared on social media, captured Nwadigo slapping the young boy multiple times for struggling with the lesson. This act of aggression drew sharp criticism from the public, prompting the school to take swift action.

In a statement, the school condemned the teacher’s behavior, describing it as entirely unacceptable and against their core values.

“The video circulating on social media reveals conduct that is entirely unacceptable and inconsistent with our school’s values,” the statement read. “We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for our students, and such behavior will not be tolerated.”

The school management confirmed Nwadigo’s indefinite suspension, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

“We have taken immediate action by suspending the teacher involved while a thorough investigation is conducted. This reflects our zero-tolerance approach to any form of misconduct, especially actions that compromise the safety and well-being of our students,” the statement added.

Additionally, the school apologized to Abayomi Michael’s family and assured them of its full support.

“To the family of the affected pupil, we extend our sincerest apologies and have reached out to ensure their concerns are addressed,” the school said.

In response to the incident, the school has introduced measures to prevent similar occurrences. These include mandatory training sessions for teachers on child protection and positive disciplinary methods. The school also launched a confidential whistle-blowing system to encourage reporting of any inappropriate behavior.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect, care, and safety, pledging to implement necessary changes to uphold these principles.
