The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has approved a six-month leave for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina.
The decision was made at the Council’s 7th Emergency Meeting, held virtually on Monday, April 14, 2025. According to a statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mufutau Ibrahim, the leave comprises 126 working days out of the Vice-Chancellor’s total entitlement of 228 days. It covers both accumulated annual and research leave.
In the meantime, Professor Olubunmi S. Shittu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), will serve as Acting Vice-Chancellor. As the most senior among the three deputy vice-chancellors, he will oversee the university’s leadership during Fasina’s absence.
The statement reads:
“The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) at its 7th Emergency Meeting held online on Monday 14th April, 2025, considered the request of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina to proceed on his accumulated Annual and Research Leave and approved six (6) months, being 126 working days out of his total entitlements of 228 days with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025.
“In addition, the Governing Council appointed Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, who is also the most senior of the three (3) Deputy Vice-Chancellors, as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University for a period of six (6) months with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025.”
This transition follows the recent conclusion of investigations into allegations previously levelled against Professor Fasina by senior staff member Engr. Folasade Adebayo. The Governing Council, which set up a panel in January 2025 to address internal disputes—including issues raised by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)—reviewed the findings at a special meeting on April 8.
The Council confirmed that no formal complaint of sexual harassment had been made against the Vice-Chancellor. The conclusion mirrored an earlier investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, where the complainant also denied any act of harassment.
The Council, however, condemned Engr. Adebayo’s act of secretly recording the Vice-Chancellor, describing it as a violation of university protocols and a potential act of blackmail. She has been instructed to issue a formal apology and was cautioned to refrain from actions that could tarnish the institution’s image.
