The Kwara State Government has signed an agreement to upgrade the Omu-Aran General Hospital into a teaching hospital for Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), marking a significant step in expanding medical education and healthcare services in the state.
TAU, based in Oko, Irepodun Local Government Area, is set to train future health professionals, including medical officers and specialists, to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system.
At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Kwara’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, described the development as a major milestone in improving healthcare access. She praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s commitment to setting new records across multiple sectors, citing the recent recruitment of over 1,000 health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and midwives, as a testament to his administration’s dedication.
Dr. El-Imam also emphasized the governor’s vision for healthcare reforms, including the implementation of the latest CONMESS salary structure, facility upgrades, and the establishment of a state teaching hospital.
“To the glory of God, I have been privileged to work in America, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria, and nowhere in the world have I seen a sector completely run by the government that succeeded,” she noted, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in sustainable healthcare.
The Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismaila Alebiosu, speaking on behalf of the Kwara South Senatorial District, described the initiative as historic.
“We have never had it this good in our region, and I speak for our people,” he said, pointing to recent projects such as the commissioning of the Osi Campus of KWASU and various road developments as signs of progress under the current administration.
The monarch also applauded TAU’s founder and Chancellor, Dr. Thomas Adewumi, for his contributions to education and humanitarian services, describing him as a visionary problem solver.
“This project we are gathered here for today is one that fills Kwara Southerners with gratitude,” he said. “It is the first of its kind in our region, and our large turnout today reflects our excitement.”
Dr. Adewumi, in his remarks, expressed appreciation for the governor’s leadership.
“Governor AbdulRazaq is a leader who believes in fairness and is making a significant impact on the lives of the people,” he said. “Since 1967, we have never had it this good. I pray that God grants him long life and continues to use him for greater accomplishments.”
The MoU marks yet another strategic move by the Kwara government to collaborate with private institutions in strengthening healthcare services. A similar agreement was previously signed with Al-Hikmah University, granting them access to Sobi Specialist Hospital in Ilorin as a teaching facility for their medical programs.
With this latest development, Kwara continues to position itself as a hub for quality medical education and improved healthcare delivery.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
