Lagos State University (LASU) is marking a major moment today, April 8, 2025, as it hosts its 28th convocation lecture with Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, delivering the keynote address.
The lecture, titled “Patriots, Citizenship and National Ownership: The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future”, is being chaired by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos, LASU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Ojo, announced that 8,711 students are graduating this year. Among them, 192 earned First Class honours, 17 graduated with unclassified degrees (MBBS/BDS), 3,076 with Second Class Upper Division, 4,397 with Second Class Lower Division, 990 with Third Class, and 39 with a Pass.
In recognition of outstanding national service, the university is also conferring honorary doctorate degrees on Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro.
Prof. Olatunji-Ojo highlighted LASU’s progress in academic excellence, including the successful accreditation of 43 out of 44 programmes during the last assessment exercise. She also mentioned advancements in research, global collaborations, ICT development, infrastructure, and sports.
To the graduating class, she had this to say: “Go forth and make an impact in the society,” while encouraging employers to “tap into the immense potential of the graduating students, who are more than prepared to contribute meaningfully to their organisations.”
