19-year-old UTME candidate commits suicide over ‘low score’

A heartbreaking incident has occurred in Lagos, where 19-year-old Opesusi Faith Timilehin reportedly took her own life after receiving her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result.

Faith, who lived with her elder sister in the Ikorodu area, allegedly consumed ‘Push Out’ rat poison on Monday after scoring 190 in the 2025 JAMB examination. According to reports, this score was lower than what she had achieved in the previous year, and it left her visibly distressed.

According to The Guardian, the teenager went to her sister’s office shortly after ingesting the poison and asked for palm oil, a common local remedy. Unaware of the situation, her sister initially didn’t act. However, on their way to the hospital, Faith confessed that she had taken poison, prompting immediate efforts to save her.

An eyewitness added:

“The shocking revelation is that she was given an admission message via her Gmail yesterday, immediately after she was confirmed dead at Kolak Hospital, Odogunyan.”

The incident has sparked discussions around the emotional pressure young students face during the admission process.
