Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the appointment of the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Muhammad Bage (Rtd), as the new Chancellor of North-West University, Kano.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, on Sunday. The appointment has been praised as a forward-thinking decision that reflects the administration’s effort to build stronger ties between traditional leadership and the education sector.
Born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Justice Bage brings with him a distinguished career in law. He earned both a diploma and an LLB from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.
His legal journey began as a Magistrate in 1982. He later became a High Court Judge in 1992, joined the Court of Appeal in 2007, and rose to the Supreme Court in 2017. Following the passing of his predecessor, he was installed as the 17th Emir of Lafia in March 2019.
In his role as a traditional ruler, he has earned a reputation for promoting peace, justice, and community unity.
Governor Yusuf stated that Justice Bage’s appointment reflects the university’s values of excellence, integrity, and nation-building. His strong leadership and track record of fairness are expected to serve as an inspiration to the university community and support its future progress.
The Emir received his appointment letter from the Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, who was accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa.
