UI ASUU Awards ₦1.1 Million Scholarships to 11 Indigent Students

In a move to support academically promising but financially challenged students, the University of Ibadan Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded scholarships totaling ₦1.1 million to 11 students for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The recipients were carefully selected after a rigorous screening process that reviewed over 100 applications. Each student demonstrated academic potential and a clear need for financial support.

The scholarship breakdown includes:

  • ₦200,000 each to two students from the National ASUU fund
  • ₦100,000 each to five students from ASUU-UI, the local branch
  • ₦50,000 each to four students, personally sponsored by Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí, a member of the branch

During the presentation ceremony, held at the ASUU Secretariat in Ajibode, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, Chairman of ASUU-UI, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to educational equity despite challenges the union itself faces, including unpaid salaries and unresolved agreements with the federal government.

“ASUU sees investing in the future of indigent students as a way of inculcating the values of support and empathy in the beneficiaries so that they will give back to the society in the future,” said Dr Afolabi.

Also speaking at the event was Professor Abiodun Olaniran, the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator, represented by ASUU LAUTECH Chairman Olujimi Dada. He emphasized that ASUU’s dedication extends beyond its own members to the broader cause of public education.

He urged union members to persist in their advocacy for improved conditions across all public universities.

Some of the scholarship recipients include:

  • Omotola Bello – Pharmacy
  • Alan Success Opeyemi – Economics
  • Moshood Opeyemi – Medicine and Surgery
  • Adegoke Adeseun Oladayo – Medicine and Surgery
  • Ogunlowo Tayo – Pharmacy

These awards reflect ASUU’s ongoing efforts to ensure that financial hardship does not stand in the way of deserving students and their academic dreams.
