UNIJOS Resumes Activities After Students Protest Over Hostel Sanitation

Normal activities have resumed at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following a peaceful student protest over poor sanitary conditions in the hostels. The protest, held earlier in the week, was organized by concerned students who demanded urgent attention to hygiene and timely maintenance of hostel facilities.

In response, the university management met with student representatives to discuss their concerns and clarify some of the misunderstandings that had circulated regarding the school’s cleaning arrangements.

According to a statement from Abdullahi Abdullahi, Senior Deputy Registrar (Information and Publications), “The university is not owing any cleaning contractor nine months of unpaid wages, as had been speculated in some quarters.”

He explained that any delays in payment were due to standard procedural requirements involved in financial transactions—not negligence. He further stated that the university had already cleared five months of outstanding payments despite financial constraints.

Abdullahi also clarified that payments to cleaning contractors are based on verified completion of assigned tasks. Those who did not provide services during the disputed period would not be entitled to payment.

Following the dialogue, the university and students reached a mutual agreement to end the protest. As part of its immediate response, the management approved hostel renovations and the evacuation of accumulated waste to improve sanitary conditions.

The university commended the students for their peaceful approach and constructive engagement, calling it a positive example of dialogue and shared responsibility within the university community.

With issues addressed and measures now in motion, both academic and administrative operations have fully resumed across campus.
