The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has celebrated a historic milestone by conferring Ph.D degrees on 213 graduates during its 55th convocation ceremonies. This remarkable achievement marks the highest number of Ph.D recipients in the institution’s history.
The hooding ceremony, held at the university’s Sports Centre, was a significant event for the School of Postgraduate Studies. Professor Abraham Osinubi, the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, expressed immense pride in this accomplishment.

“This year’s convocation sets a record. Last year, we had 155 Ph.D graduates. This year, we graduated 213 Ph.D holders. This is the highest so far in the history of the university. We are so proud of it,” he stated.
Professor Osinubi also urged the new graduates to aim for excellence and make meaningful contributions to society. “We are very proud of our graduands. They’re not going to disappoint us. They’re going to excel in various fields. They have acquired so much over the years, and we are so glad to project them to the world,” he added.
Highlighting the progress of the postgraduate school, he shared, “We got a donor to build our School of Postgraduate Studies. The building is an ultramodern one, efficient and energy-saving. For years, we didn’t have a building of our own, and this achievement is a source of pride.”

Among the graduates was Dr. Ademola Olajire, a Mass Communication Ph.D holder and the Director of Media and Communication for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Reflecting on his journey, he said, “It was never easy. It’s a journey of six years. It was challenging, but I scaled through. I give gratitude to God Almighty, my bosses in the office, and my family. Sometimes, I traveled from Abuja to Lagos for weeks because of school. At the end of the day, the joy is that it’s a success.”
This convocation has not only set a new benchmark for UNILAG but also solidified its reputation as a leading postgraduate institution in West Africa.
