A group of teenagers writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Unity Model School in Asaba, Delta State, were made to sit for one of their papers late in the evening—under torchlight.
In a video that has been making rounds on social media, a woman is heard expressing her frustration as she captures the dimly lit exam hall. According to her, the students were originally scheduled to write their paper by 2:00 PM, but the exam materials didn’t arrive until 6:00 PM.
By the time the exam started, daylight had faded. With no electricity available in the school, a torchlight was used to illuminate the classroom so the students could write their paper.
“It’s not OK,” the woman says in the video, visibly upset about the situation. She reflects on her own experience as a student, saying, “Even during my time, when lanterns were common, we were not subjected to such.”
The incident has drawn criticism online, raising concerns about the state of public education infrastructure and exam coordination in the country.
