Ambrose Alli University (AAU), located in Ekpoma, Edo State, has taken disciplinary action against 34 students from its College of Medicine for their involvement in examination malpractice during the 2022/2023 academic session.
The university disclosed that the affected students have been rusticated for a period ranging from two to four semesters, depending on the severity of their misconduct. These penalties were based on findings by the Mobile Students Disciplinary Committee set up to investigate the incident.
The announcement was made through an official bulletin signed by Deputy Registrar (Senate), F.O. Omoigui, on behalf of the Acting Registrar, as well as the Principal Assistant Registrar for Information and Public Relations, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika.
The sanctioned students are currently in their third and fifth years of study, across various departments including Haematology, Histopathology, Medical Microbiology, Medicine and Surgery, Physiology, and Chemical Pathology.
According to the bulletin:
“This is to inform you that the university management, after due consideration of the reports submitted by the Mobile Disciplinary Committee (College of Medicine), has approved the penalties recommended for the offences committed by the following students during the 2022/2023 session.”
Out of the 34 students, 21 have been suspended for two semesters, while 13 will face four semesters of rustication. Specifically, 20 students in their fifth year were sanctioned — 12 for two semesters and eight for four semesters.
The disciplinary action stems from allegations that some students were caught with unauthorized written materials during the HAE 503 examination, including a portion of the university’s answer booklet containing answers. Others were accused of impersonating fellow students during the 401 exams.
In the same disciplinary review, six students were cleared of all charges, two were advised to uphold good conduct, and one student received a warning.
