Abia State to Recruit 2,500 Teachers and Launch Education Initiatives

The Abia State Government has announced plans to employ 2,500 teachers to address the shortage of educators in primary and secondary schools. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr. Goodluck Ubochi, during a press briefing in Umuahia following the State Executive Council meeting.

According to Ubochi, the recruitment drive is a key step toward improving the quality of education in the state. He noted, “We are embarking on massive employment of teachers. We will employ 2,500 teachers to make sure we cover the gap that has been bothering us in the system. There is no way you can talk about quality education without teachers.”

To ensure transparency and accessibility, the application process will be conducted online. Ubochi explained, “It is not going to be a process where you bring your application to the ministry or anybody. We will have a platform where you will do it online. By Friday, we will announce the details.”

The government is also stepping up efforts to enforce its Free and Compulsory Basic Education programme by launching a task force named Education Marshalls. The task force will ensure that all school-age children are in school during school hours. Children found loitering will be taken to the nearest school, with their parents or guardians contacted to resolve the situation. “We don’t need to have any child of school age outside the school environment during school hours,” Ubochi said.

In addition, the state is introducing a Mathematics Clinic for Junior and Senior Secondary 3 students to strengthen their confidence and skills in the subject. This initiative will run daily from 7:00 am to 7:45 am, with seasoned teachers leading the sessions. Extended classes from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm will also focus on core subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English to better prepare students for their examinations.

These measures underline the government’s commitment to enhancing education, addressing staffing challenges, and ensuring students are well-prepared to excel in their academic pursuits.
