The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, located in Oferekpe. This is a significant development for the state and its educational landscape.
On Thursday in Abuja, NUC’s Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Ribadu, presented the official letter of recognition to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru. The university is now officially the 66th state university in Nigeria and the 278th university in the Nigerian University System.
Ribadu mentioned that a copy of the recognition letter would be forwarded to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to ensure proper integration into the system.
However, the NUC Executive Secretary emphasized that while the university has received recognition, it cannot begin academic activities immediately. Before that can happen, a resource verification process will be carried out to assess the infrastructure, staffing, and facilities. This process is essential for ensuring the university is adequately prepared for students. Ribadu assured the university would receive full support once it’s ready for academic activities.
Governor Nwifuru reflected on the vision behind the establishment of the university, which began in 2021. He highlighted the goal of enhancing access to quality, affordable tertiary education for residents of Ebonyi. This initiative aims to address the shortage of skilled technical manpower in the state.
The governor further assured that the state government was committed to the university’s growth, with funding already allocated for the development of essential infrastructure. Some of the key structures under construction include the Senate building, staff quarters, students’ hostels, faculty buildings, and the university library.
In preparation for the university’s success, principal officers have already been appointed to oversee its growth and development.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
