Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has donated ₦10 million to the Tansian College of Nursing in Oba, Anambra State.
During his visit to the institution on Saturday, Obi emphasized the critical role of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation in driving Nigeria’s development. He called on leaders to prioritize these sectors, noting that education remains the most effective tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. According to him, nations that have achieved significant progress have done so by heavily investing in human capital through quality education.
Presenting the cheque, Obi commended Tansian University for its commitment to training healthcare professionals. He stressed that strengthening the healthcare sector begins with equipping institutions with the necessary resources to produce skilled professionals who can serve society effectively. Addressing the students, he urged them to stay focused and dedicated, emphasizing that an educated population forms the foundation of a stable and prosperous society.
The Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Prof. Eugene Nwadialor, expressed profound gratitude for Obi’s unwavering support.
“Your philanthropy has already had a profound impact on our institution, and it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you in person. Through your generosity, you are not only meeting the immediate needs of the university but also investing in a brighter future for generations to come,” Nwadialor said.
He also used the occasion to highlight the plight of 38 nursing students who had been on a scholarship sponsored by the late Monsignor Johnbosco Akam before his passing, leaving them unable to continue their education. Nwadialor appealed to Obi to extend his generosity by supporting these students to complete their studies.
The Vice-Chancellor further invited Obi to be the Special Guest of Honour at the university’s convocation ceremony on March 29, 2025, expressing confidence that his presence would inspire the students and enrich the event.
The gathering was attended by staff, students, and dignitaries who praised Obi’s consistent investment in education across Nigeria. Many acknowledged that his contributions have transformed the lives of young people and strengthened institutions.
Obi was accompanied by his former commissioners, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Prof. Patrick Obi, and Ndubisi Menakaya, underscoring his commitment to fostering growth in the education and healthcare sectors.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
