Community Secondary School Igboh-Etche Wins 2025 NLNG Science Quiz, Shines in Renewable Energy Innovation

Community Secondary School, Igboh-Etche, has emerged the winner of the 2025 NLNG Science Quiz Competition, securing the top spot after a thrilling contest with seven other schools across Rivers State. The event, themed “Renewable Energy: The Future of Sustainability,” was a celebration of scientific talent and innovation among secondary school students.

The grand finale, held on Saturday, June 21, at JSignature Hotel in Port Harcourt, brought together the best young minds in science and technology. It marked the conclusion of a rigorous three-stage competition featuring a Championship Round, a Science Project Exhibition, and a final quiz battle.

In the Senior Secondary 2 (SS2) category, Community Secondary School, Igboh-Etche stood out for their deep understanding of scientific concepts—especially those around renewable energy—and their confident approach to problem-solving.

To make the experience more interactive, participants used a mobile app system to answer questions in real-time, with prompts displayed on a large LED screen. Winners across different categories received awards worth up to ₦10 million, with special recognition for schools that showcased outstanding innovation and academic performance.

In the Science Project Exhibition category, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School took first place, impressing judges with a hands-on project that offered practical solutions. Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) and Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, followed in second and third places.

For the Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) category, Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, won the top prize. Niger Delta Science School and Government Secondary School, Abua, secured second and third places respectively. Other notable finalists included Government Secondary School, Eneka and Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sophia Horsfall, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, emphasized the broader goal of the initiative:

“This competition goes beyond academics — it’s about building the capacity of tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and policymakers.”

She reaffirmed NLNG’s dedication to investing in both clean energy and the young minds who will lead the shift toward sustainability. Since its inception, the competition has reached over 200 public schools, encouraging students to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State Chapter, echoed the call for sustained investment in science education, stressing the need to empower students with innovation and creativity for national development.

Originally launched in 2008 and revived in 2020, the NLNG Science Quiz Competition has grown into a key platform for promoting science education in Rivers State. With the recent addition of the Science Project Exhibition, the programme continues to bridge the gap between theory and practice, inspiring students to turn classroom lessons into real-world solutions.

Organised in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education, STAN, and Dragnet Solutions Ltd, the competition maintains its focus on transparency, inclusivity, and quality.

As Nigeria and the rest of the world shift toward clean energy solutions, platforms like this continue to equip young minds with the tools they need to lead the way into a sustainable future.
