Daura Zone has emerged as the overall champion of the Katsina State Agricultural Science Debate Competition, edging out Katsina Zone in a keenly contested grand finale organised in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The competition, designed to promote agricultural education, public speaking, and analytical skills among basic education learners in Katsina State, brought together participants from Katsina, Daura, Malumfashi, and Dutsinma Local Government Education Authorities.
The grand finale featured a debate between Katsina and Daura zones on the motion: “Crop farming is more profitable than poultry farming.”
Arguing in favour of the motion, the Katsina team maintained that crop farming is a more sustainable and reliable source of income, with lower risk of total loss and long-term economic benefits despite seasonal challenges.
The Daura team took the opposing side, contending that poultry farming offers faster returns on investment due to its short production cycle, high market demand, and potential for job creation. They argued that poultry farmers can recover their investments within weeks, unlike crop farmers who face unpredictable weather and fluctuating market prices.
At the end of the contest, the judges declared Daura Zone the winner. Katsina Zone finished second while Dutsinma Zone took third place.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Katsina State SUBEB, Dr. Kabir Magaji, commended all participants for their outstanding performances, praising them for demonstrating confidence, fluency in English, sound reasoning, and excellent presentation skills.
He also acknowledged the dedication of teachers and organisers who guided the pupils throughout the training and debate sessions.
Dr. Magaji reaffirmed SUBEB’s commitment to creating more platforms for pupils to develop their intellectual and leadership potential, expressing confidence that Katsina State would continue to produce students capable of excelling at national and international levels.
