The University of Ibadan has emerged as the highest-ranked Nigerian university in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
The University of Lagos came second in the country.
According to the ranking data, 32,148 universities and higher education institutions were assessed globally.
UI placed 1,291st in the world and first in Nigeria.
UNILAG ranked 1,355th globally and second in Nigeria.
The University of Nigeria came third nationally and 1,397th globally.
Covenant University, Ota, ranked fourth in Nigeria and 1,522nd globally.
Landmark University secured the fifth position with a global rank of 1,659.
The Webometrics ranking, published biannually, assesses institutions using indicators including visibility, openness and excellence.
These reflect digital presence, accessibility of scholarly resources and research impact.
Other Nigerian institutions in the top 10 include the University of Ilorin (1,883), Obafemi Awolowo University (1,986), Ahmadu Bello University (2,068), the University of Port Harcourt (2,077) and the Federal University of Technology, Akure (2,203).
The rankings also featured institutions such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Bayero University Kano, University of Calabar, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, University of Uyo and Lagos State University also made the top 20.
The National Open University of Nigeria, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and University of Abuja were also ranked among the top 25.
A total of 50 Nigerian institutions were featured in the global ranking.
