ATBU Welcomes 4,364 Fresh Students for the 2024/2025 Academic Session

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has officially welcomed 4,364 new students into its diverse academic programs for the 2024/2025 academic session. The matriculation ceremony, held at the university’s Yelwa Campus, marked the formal induction of these students into the ATBU community.

During the event, Zakariya Jubrin, a lawyer from the university’s Legal Department, administered the oath and covenant of the institution to the new students. The ceremony, held at the 1,000-seater Lecture Theater, was a significant milestone for both the students and the university.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Hassan Garba, emphasized the importance of adhering to the university’s dress code, stating, “One key aspect of our university culture is our dress code. I urge you all to observe this code, which is designed to promote modesty, respect, and professionalism. Your appearance reflects not only on yourself but also on our institution and its moral radar, and we expect you to take pride in representing ATBU.”

Prof. Garba made it clear that lecturers and class managers have the authority to remove any student who violates the dress code, regardless of their status. He also issued a stern warning against cultism and other destructive behaviors, stating that such activities are strictly prohibited. “Furthermore, I must emphasise the importance of avoiding destructive behaviours such as drug abuse and cultism. These vices have no place in our university, and we will not tolerate them,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor urged students to focus on their studies and personal growth, advising them to surround themselves with positive influences. “Instead, I encourage you to dedicate yourselves to your studies, to explore your passions, and to develop your talents. Surround yourselves with positive influences, and avoid bad company that can lead you astray. Remember, the choices you make today will shape your future, and we want to see you succeed.”

Prof. Garba also highlighted the university’s commitment to excellence, integrity, and responsibility. “As you begin your academic journey, I want to remind you that ATBU is not just an institution but a community that values excellence, integrity, and responsibility. We are committed to providing you with a quality education and expect you to uphold the highest standards of behaviour and conduct.”

Reflecting on his tenure as Vice Chancellor, he shared his vision for the university: “Since I assumed duty, I made it clear that commitment to duty, dedication, and punctuality are my watchwords. It is my belief that by so doing, we are going to make this university great and also attain our vision of becoming a centre of excellence for the creation, transfer, and application of scientific knowledge for the advancement of mankind in a friendly, interactive, and multi-cultural environment.”

The matriculation ceremony, he noted, is a symbolic event that officially welcomes new students into the ATBU family. “May I, at this juncture, use this opportunity to congratulate the lucky ones to be so selected among thousands of other Nigerians who applied for admission into this university through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). This is indeed a rare privilege for you, and you should not take it for granted,” he added.

Prof. Garba concluded by encouraging students to follow the university’s rules and regulations, seek guidance when needed, and remain focused on their academic goals. “As you navigate the challenges and opportunities of university life, I urge you to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to your goals. Seek help when you need it, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Our faculty and staff are here to support you every step of the way.”

The event was a celebration of new beginnings, marking the start of an exciting academic journey for the 4,364 students now part of the ATBU community.
