The Katsina State government has formally requested the cancellation of the recently held WAEC English language examination. This call came after the paper began several hours late nationwide, forcing students to write under inadequate lighting.
During a visit to the WAEC office in Katsina, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Zainab Musa-Musawa announced the state’s position. Her letter, signed by Permanent Secretary Ummukhair Ahmed, detailed concerns over how the delay disrupted candidates’ performance.
WAEC explained that the postponement was due to intensified efforts to prevent exam malpractice, particularly the leaking of question papers. However, this meant some students started their English paper in near-darkness. “Students had to write the examination at night without light until torch lights, handsets lights, security lights were provided,” she said.
While urging patience, Musa-Musawa asked schools, parents and community leaders to await the outcome of the official petition. The state hopes WAEC will take swift action to ensure fairness and uphold educational standards.
