A 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, has been arrested for allegedly setting her boyfriend, Sunny Amadi, on fire. The 32-year-old man, said to be the father of her unborn child, died shortly after the incident.
The tragic event occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street in the Choba area of Rivers State, throwing the university community into shock and mourning.
While the full details remain unclear, neighbours suggested the incident may have followed a heated argument between the two. Cynthia reportedly fled the scene immediately after the fire broke out but was later apprehended by police.
Sunny Amadi was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) by concerned residents but was confirmed dead from his injuries.
Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said an investigation is already underway to determine what led to the fatal fire.
“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of and deeply concerned about the report depicting a fire incident that occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt.
The probable cause of the fire incident is yet to be ascertained, and a thorough investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further developments will be made public as more information becomes available.”
