A 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has been found dead inside a bush along the North Gate of the institution. The deceased, identified as Favour Olaniyi, a 23-year-old male student in the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was discovered under circumstances that have led to speculation of suicide.

An empty bottle of a substance suspected to be a lethal herbicide was allegedly found beside his body at the scene. Following the discovery, students and residents in the area gathered in distress, trying to make sense of the tragic incident.

The Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol at FUTA, Adegbenro Adebanjo, confirmed the incident and expressed the institution’s deep sadness over the loss. The parents of the deceased have also been notified.

Adebanjo added that the university is fully cooperating with police investigators, and the Students Affairs Division has since been providing counselling support to students affected by the tragedy.
