The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has announced a N500,000 penalty for any student caught driving recklessly within or around its campus premises after completing final examinations.
The university’s Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu, made the announcement on Thursday while addressing members of the university community, saying the measure was necessary to put an end to a dangerous trend that had already caused repeated injuries on campus.
According to Ugwu, students celebrating the end of their final examinations have developed a habit of driving recklessly, posing serious risks to lives and property within the institution.
“The reckless driving has caused incessant injuries, and we urge students to leave quietly after writing their examinations. Any vehicle impounded over such an anomaly will pay a N500,000 penalty,” he said.
The directive takes effect from July 31 and is targeted specifically at students who will be completing their final examinations around that period.
Ugwu noted that the prohibition was not new, explaining that it was backed by a resolution of the Enugu State House of Assembly and had previously been communicated to the vice-chancellor through a memo from the state commissioner for education dated December 20, 2024.
Beyond the financial penalty, any student found guilty of reckless driving will also face additional disciplinary sanctions in line with the university’s regulations, and their vehicle will not be released until the full fine is paid.
All deans, directors, and heads of departments have been directed to sensitise their final year students and ensure full compliance.
The university’s chief security officer and other law enforcement agencies have also been placed on alert to maintain order throughout the campus.
“The university remains resolute in enforcing the ban, in ensuring the safety of lives and property on campus,” Ugwu stated.
