Scoring below 180 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can feel like a major setback for many candidates.
But education experts say a low JAMB score does not have to end anyone’s academic dreams.
Several alternative pathways still exist for candidates who want to continue their education, even without impressive UTME scores.
Below are six options worth considering.
1. Diploma Programmes
Many universities and polytechnics offer diploma programmes that run for about two years. These provide practical training in courses like Business Administration, Mass Communication and Engineering.
Diploma programmes have lower admission requirements, and graduates may qualify for direct entry into 200 level after completing the course.
2. JUPEB/Foundation Programmes
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme is a one-year advanced-level course that leads to Direct Entry admission into 200 level.
Candidates do not need to rewrite UTME, and the certificate is recognised by more than 40 universities across Nigeria.
3. Pre-degree and Remedial Programmes
Several universities run pre-degree or remedial programmes for candidates who fall short of admission requirements. These typically last between six months and a year.
Outstanding students in these programmes are often given priority when applying for admission into degree courses.
4. Part-time and Weekend Degree Programmes
Part-time and weekend degree programmes are ideal for candidates who need flexible study schedules, including working individuals.
Admission is usually based on O’Level results and institutional screening, with little or no dependence on UTME scores.
5. Direct Entry Admission
Candidates who already hold qualifications such as National Diploma (ND), National Certificate in Education (NCE), IJMB or JUPEB certificates can apply for Direct Entry into 200 level.
This route allows applicants to skip UTME entirely and gain admission based on their existing qualifications.
6. IJMB Programme
The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme runs for about nine to ten months, during which students study three relevant subjects.
Successful candidates qualify for Direct Entry into 200 level, and many federal and state universities accept the certificate.
Candidates with low JAMB scores are encouraged to explore these options rather than giving up on their university dreams.
