The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities in Nigeria to stop issuing admission letters to candidates, saying it is not within their mandate.
The Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, made the statement while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.
He said JAMB is the only body legally empowered to issue official admission letters into all tertiary institutions in the country. This covers universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Prof. Aina pointed out that many candidates believe any document that appears to come from a school is genuine, once it says they have been offered admission.
He urged universities guilty of the practice to stop it. According to him, they also have a duty to make sure candidates get the right documents from the board.
The registrar recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education has directed that all admissions must be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). Anything done outside the platform, he said, is illegal and invalid.
As a result, no institution can replace the official JAMB admission letter with its own. The official letter is issued by the board after a candidate has accepted an admission offer on CAPS.
Prof. Aina added that only admissions made through the platform are recognised. They are also the only ones accepted for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation, among other purposes.
