UK Universities Withdraw Admission Offers to Nigerians

UK universities withdraw admission offers to international students, especially those from Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as tighter immigration rules take effect, according to Business Insider Africa.

Institutions are changing their admission practices to meet government requirements. Failing to do so could affect their ability to recruit students from abroad.

The report says the share of UK study visa applications withdrawn rose from 2.3% in the first half of 2025 to 10.5% in the same period of 2026.

Nigeria recorded a sharper jump. Withdrawal rates for Nigerian applicants climbed from 4.5% to 22.7%.

Withdrawn applications are not the same as visa refusals. A refusal happens when immigration authorities formally reject an application.

Under the new rules, universities face a 5% visa refusal threshold. This pushes them to assess an applicant’s chances of getting a visa before issuing or keeping an offer.

Schools that fail to meet sponsorship requirements risk losing their licence to enrol international students. That would cut into a major source of tuition income.

For Nigerian students, the development is a worry. Many have long seen British universities as a route to globally recognised degrees and better career prospects.

British universities also stand to lose. Many rely on the higher fees paid by international students to fund their programmes and daily operations.

Applicants now face more uncertainty in an already competitive process. A student who meets every academic requirement may still lose an offer because of a school’s immigration compliance concerns.

As universities adjust their recruitment plans, the situation shows the growing tension between Britain’s immigration priorities and the heavy reliance of its higher education sector on international students. It could also narrow opportunities for students from Nigeria and other affected countries.
