Tension has hit Ugya community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State over allegations that a school principal beat a JSS 2 student.
The principal of Junior Secondary School, Ugya, is also accused of having the student’s father taken to a police station after the man confronted him.
A resident, Huzaifa Yusuf, who shared details of the incident, said the student was allegedly beaten for not taking part in manual labour after school hours.
According to Yusuf, the father went to the school to protest what he saw as excessive punishment. He reportedly warned the principal against treating his child that way.
The father was, however, said to have been taken to the police station after the confrontation.
The incident has raised concern among residents of the community.
They have called on the Nasarawa State Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities to investigate the allegations, establish what happened and ensure justice is served.
As of the time of this report, the school authorities, the police and the state Ministry of Education had not issued any official statement on the matter.
