Shanahan University Acting VC Meets Teaching Hospital Management to Boost Learning

The acting Vice-Chancellor of Shanahan University, Onitsha, Anambra State, Prof. Dominic Obielosi, has met with the management of St. Charles Borromeo Shanahan University Teaching Hospital, the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing Sciences.

The meeting aimed at building stronger cooperation and improving learning. It held on Tuesday at the Teaching Hospital in Onitsha.

Obielosi, who assumed office on September 1, 2026, was joined by the College of Medicine Provost, Prof. Evaristus Afiadigwe, and the Registrar, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Emenu.

Others present were the Nursing Sciences Administrator, Rev. Fr. Fidelis Nwanze, the Provost, Lady Theresa Odinukwe, and faculty Deans.

The Hospital management team was led by the CEO, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Izunna Okonkwo, alongside the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Ben Ezemenahi, the Chief Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Osita Izunwa, the Director of Administration, Lady Uche Okeke, and the Deputy CEO, Rev. Fr. Kingsley Okaro.

Both institutions are owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha under Archbishop Valerian Okeke, the Archbishop and metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Obielosi said the university is preparing for continuous accreditation. The goal, he said, is to produce graduates who will be change agents and help realise the founder’s vision.

He noted that his predecessor, Prof. Obi Oguejiofor, laid a solid foundation. The university is now in talks with institutions in the USA, China and other countries on collaborations “where students can start at Shanahan and complete their studies abroad.”

“The strategic meeting is a discussion among brothers aimed at synergy and cooperation with the aim of moving the institution forward. And it was highly successful.

“Over 1,000 candidates have applied to the institution in the ongoing admission and over 700 have been admitted, with many switching from other universities to Shanahan university.

“We also assure parents of strong moral formation at the institution leveraging my 17 years as Rector of Holy Family Youth Village, Amansea,” he said.

The CEO of the Teaching Hospital, Dr. Izunna Okonkwo, said the hospital has put up over seven gigantic structures in seven years. These include eight independent theatres to support medical students’ clinicals.

He added that plans are underway for a new four-storey building for the College of Medicine.

Okonkwo described the interaction with the new Vice-Chancellor and his team as successful. He said it was a review of the journey since the establishment of Shanahan University.
