Chief of Army Staff Awards N500,000 Scholarship to LASU Student

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has awarded a N500,000 scholarship to Mariam Olayiwola, a first-year physiology student at Lagos State University (LASU).

This scholarship is part of the COAS Special Scholarship Scheme for Indigent Students, an initiative launched in 2024 by the late COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to support education and empower promising young Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of the COAS, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Farouk Mijinyawa, presented the scholarship cheque to Mariam and praised her academic achievements. He urged her to remain focused on her studies and noted, “I encourage you to continue to work hard for more accolades. Your performance will serve as an inspiration to your peers and siblings.”

The scholarship will cover Mariam’s tuition fees and additional academic expenses, easing the financial burden on her family.

According to Maj.-Gen. Mijinyawa, the programme reflects the army’s dedication to fostering educational development and contributing positively to society. Initiated by the late Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the scholarship scheme aims to create opportunities for talented students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Through this initiative, the Nigerian Army continues to demonstrate its commitment to community welfare and empowering young individuals to achieve their academic aspirations.
