Oyo State Government begins bursary payment to 2,950 students

The Oyo State Government has commenced the disbursement of bursary awards to 2,950 students across various institutions, reaffirming its commitment to education and student welfare. The beneficiaries include students in Law Schools, Medical Schools, Aviation Schools, and final-year students in universities and polytechnics across Nigeria.

Announcing the initiative, the Senior Special Assistant on Students’ Affairs to Governor Seyi Makinde, Victor Olojede, stated that the bursary, approved by the governor in March 2024, totals over N554,989,000. According to Olojede, a total of about 3,000 students applied, but only those who met the eligibility criteria were selected.

“We are officially commencing the payment of bursary awards to final-year students in polytechnics, universities, Nigerian Law School, Aviation Schools, and Medical and Clinical Schools. Governor Makinde’s dedication to education is commendable, especially as previous administrations did not prioritize bursary awards and scholarships for students,” he noted.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Scholarship Board, Olawale Atilola, described the initiative as another testament to Makinde’s investment in education. He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, emphasizing that due process was followed in selecting the students.

Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the financial support. Yetunde Ayoola, one of the recipients, shared her excitement:

“Before this bursary, my only financial support came from my parents. I have never had access to a scholarship due to age restrictions and other criteria. But this opportunity only required me to be an indigene of Oyo State, which made me eligible. I am truly grateful to Governor Makinde for this initiative.”

Similarly, Akanbi Mayowa acknowledged how the bursary would ease his financial burden:

“This support will greatly impact my education by helping me cover my final-year fees. Before now, I had to take on menial jobs and rely on my parents’ limited support. This initiative is a huge relief.”

A Medical and Surgery student from the University of Ibadan also expressed appreciation:

“For years, we haven’t received bursary support, and this is the first time. It’s coming at the perfect time, as it will help with final-year fees and induction costs. I am truly grateful.”

This bursary program highlights Oyo State’s commitment to supporting students and investing in the future of its youth. As the disbursement continues, many students will benefit from the financial relief, further strengthening the administration’s dedication to education.
