University of Ibadan Welcomes 4,649 Fresh Students for 2024/2025 Academic Year

The University of Ibadan has officially welcomed 4,649 new students into its academic community for the 2024/2025 session. The matriculation ceremony took place at the university’s International Conference Centre in Ibadan on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, revealed that the new intakes were admitted through both the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry routes, including students from within and outside Nigeria.

He explained that 11,912 candidates sat for the post-UTME screening after meeting the 200-point benchmark. Out of these, 7,017 candidates scored 50% and above. In total, 4,411 students gained admission through UTME, while 238 were admitted via Direct Entry.

Professor Adebowale encouraged the students to aim high, uphold integrity, and make the most of the opportunities available to them. He called on them to show resilience and contribute positively to the institution’s proud legacy.

Also addressing the new students was Mr. Olukayode Aiyenuyo, a UI alumnus and industry expert. In his inspiring message, he urged them to make their time at the university meaningful.

He shared a thought-provoking distinction:

“There is a need to find balance, because who you choose to be is far more important than what you want to do.”

He explained that while “doing” focuses on tasks and meeting goals, “being” is about presence, purpose, and intentionality. He encouraged the students to craft their identities by embracing diversity, seeking knowledge, and aligning their ambitions with their values.

“Success does not come without trying. Good grades do not come without frustration. Life is too special to be spent stressed. Learn to navigate challenges with grace,” he said.

He concluded by reminding the matriculants of the vast potential within them, urging them to use their new status as a stepping stone to greater heights.
