Ogun Governor Donates School Facility for New Federal Medical University in Abeokuta

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has donated the State Model College in Onijaganjagan, near Abeokuta, to serve as the temporary site for the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences (FUMMSA), Abeokuta.

The announcement was made on Saturday during the commissioning of capital projects at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun revealed that the decision followed a request from Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education and former Minister of State for Health, who raised concerns about the limited takeoff funding for the new university. According to the governor, the available budget could barely cover fencing the greenfield site originally proposed for the university.

“We looked around and after consultation and deliberations, we have finally decided, in appreciation of what the federal government has done in giving us this university, I am proud today to announce the donation of the model college at Onijaganjagan to be used as a takeoff structure for this new University of Health Sciences, Abeokuta,” Abiodun said.

The governor emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments, adding that this is the second time Ogun State is donating infrastructure to the health sector.

He further noted that healthcare is a fundamental human right, stressing his administration’s commitment to providing accessible medical care for all citizens. He reaffirmed Ogun State’s continued investment in both primary and secondary healthcare infrastructure, describing a healthy population as the backbone of a prosperous society.

Governor Abiodun also pledged ongoing support to FMC Abeokuta and other medical institutions, highlighting how partnership among stakeholders is key to building inclusive and sustainable development.

In his remarks, he praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strengthening primary healthcare and expanding access to health insurance through the National Health Insurance Authority. He also acknowledged the federal government’s efforts in supplying medical equipment and pharmaceuticals to health centers across the country.

The governor applauded the leadership and staff of FMC Abeokuta for their dedication and professionalism, stating that the new projects will enhance the hospital’s capacity and bring it closer to achieving the goals of its founders.
