The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a significant rise in the number of high scorers in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). According to the board, 17,025 candidates, representing 0.88% of the total 1,931,467 who sat for the exam, scored 300 and above—the highest since the introduction of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) in 2013.
This data, obtained from JAMB’s 2025 statistical report, shows a steady improvement in student performance year after year. In comparison, only 8,401 candidates (0.46%) scored 300+ in 2024, while 5,318 (0.35%) achieved this feat in 2023. Earlier figures were even lower: 724 (0.06%) in 2021, and none in both 2014 and 2013.
In the 250 and above range, 117,373 candidates (6.08%) performed within this bracket in 2025—up from 77,070 (4.18%) in 2024 and 56,736 (3.73%) in 2023.
Similarly, 565,988 candidates (29.3%) scored 200 and above, showing growth compared to 439,961 (24%) in 2024 and 355,689 (23.36%) in 2023. However, a large portion of candidates—1,365,479 (70.7%)—still scored below 200, although this figure reflects a small improvement from the 76% in 2024 and 76.64% in 2023.
Year-on-year comparisons highlight the progress made. For instance, in 2021, only 168,650 candidates (13%) scored 200+, whereas in 2016, the number stood at 568,847 (34%).
JAMB attributes this upward trend to increasing familiarity with the CBT system and ongoing improvements in its examination process since CBT was introduced in 2013. The 2025 results suggest that these efforts are beginning to pay off, leading to better outcomes for many students.
JAMB is expected to issue more updates regarding how this year’s results will influence the 2025 admission process into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In related news, the board also released the results of a resit exam conducted for candidates affected by a technical glitch during the original UTME. The initial results were released on May 9, but on May 14, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, revealed that results for 379,997 candidates across 157 centres in Lagos and the South-East were compromised.
The issue, caused by faulty server updates, disrupted the upload of candidates’ answers during the first three days of the exam. Affected candidates were directed to retake the test in order to ensure fairness and data accuracy.

This is not fair enough. My daughter’s part of questions were not visible while the options for answers are there. How will a child pick answers to a number that has no questions, and it’s 15questions like that. The whole thing would have been cancel and let everyone rewrite that is when we will have fair justice to all this faults recorded.
