LASUED Pushes AI and Digital Tools to Transform Nigeria’s Tourism Sector

The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has called for wider use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to reposition Nigeria’s tourism sector and support sustainable economic growth.

The call was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, at a workshop marking the 2026 World Tourism Day at Oto-Awori LCDA, Lagos.

The workshop held on Monday, September 28. It was organised by the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in collaboration with the Departments of Theatre Arts and Music.

Its theme was “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” while the sub-theme was “Harnessing Innovation for Sustainable Tourism Development.”

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Shittu Morufudeen Adeniyi, the Vice-Chancellor said universities must lead the way in using digital tools and AI to transform the tourism industry.

She noted that tourism has moved beyond destinations alone, with people, places and technology now shaping its future. According to her, AI and digital frameworks are changing how people travel, experience cultures and manage tourism resources.

Lafiaji-Okuneye commended the organising departments for promoting the interdisciplinary approach expected of a 21st-century university. She also urged participants, especially students, to apply what they learned to research, entrepreneurship and sustainable tourism development.

The Dean of the College of Management Sciences Education (COMSED), Prof. Ajani Safurat Toyin, described AI as a major force shaping tourism and business leadership.

She said it already influences data analytics, digital entrepreneurship, demand forecasting, pricing, marketing, customer management and resource allocation.

Ajani urged researchers, educators and students to engage critically with new technologies and produce ethical, forward-thinking professionals who can use AI to promote economic development and social responsibility.

In his keynote address, Dr Olumide Olusola Metilelu said AI could help tourism businesses understand visitor trends, personalise experiences, improve operations, manage demand and make better decisions.

He, however, pointed to the fragmentation of tourism operators, hotels, transport providers and attractions as a major challenge holding back the industry in Nigeria.

According to Metilelu, closer collaboration among stakeholders, backed by digital technologies, could improve efficiency and make the sector more competitive.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Executive Chairman of Oto-Awori LCDA, Hon. Kareem Azeez Abiodun; the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Solomon Bonu Saanu; and the Managing Director of Presken Hotels and Resorts, Mr Pius Obaje.

The event drew academics, government officials, industry practitioners, staff and students. Among them were the Dean of the College of Vocational Education (COVED), Prof. Luqman Hussain, and the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Programmes, Prof. Okedeyi Shakirudeen Abiodun.
