The Provost of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Obudu, Dr. Richard Otubaku, has called on newly admitted students to uphold discipline and avoid behaviors that could derail their academic journey.
Speaking at the college’s 42nd matriculation ceremony and the 13th degree matriculation event held recently on campus in Cross River State, Dr. Otubaku urged the fresh students to stay away from laziness and misconduct that could tarnish their future.
With the theme, “A New Era of NCE and Full Degree Awarding Status,” he stressed the dangers of cultism, exam malpractice, and other negative behaviors, encouraging students to choose hard work, integrity, and resilience instead.
Dr. Otubaku assured the students of the college’s dedication to maintaining high academic standards, promising that their time at FCE Obudu would be transformative, helping them discover their potentials and equipping them for future success.
Reflecting on the college’s impact, the Provost noted that FCE Obudu has been instrumental in shaping leaders who are making notable contributions both within Nigeria and internationally.
For the 2025/2026 academic session, a total of 875 students were admitted — 310 into degree programs affiliated with the University of Calabar, and 565 into the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) program.
Dr. Otubaku also announced an exciting development: by September 2025, FCE Obudu will become a full degree-awarding institution. The college will operate under a dual mandate, continuing to offer both NCE and degree programs concurrently.
Sharing his personal story as an alumnus — having earned his NCE at the college before obtaining a Ph.D. — he encouraged students to seize the opportunity provided by the newly launched federal student loan scheme. Initiated by President Bola Tinubu, the program is designed to ease financial burdens and expand access to higher education.
During the event, Prof. Florence Obi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, represented by Prof. German Anagbog, also addressed the students.
Describing matriculation as “a gateway to endless opportunities,” she emphasized its role in knowledge acquisition, intellectual growth, creativity, and overall personal development.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
