The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA) is preparing to begin its academic session this September, according to Vice Chancellor Professor Fatiu Arogundade.
This announcement came during a courtesy visit to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where the university’s Governing Council, led by Chairman Dr. Usman Muhammed Shanawa, was hosted.
Arogundade explained that the university would initially operate from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), offering courses in medicine, nursing, medical rehabilitation, and other related fields. He reassured that all necessary arrangements were being made for a smooth start.
“The university is going to take off in September, all other things being equal. We do not know what our carrying capacity will be, but definitely we’re going to start with Medicine, Nursing, Medical Rehabilitation and some others,” he said.
He also mentioned that officials from the National Universities Commission (NUC) were expected to conduct a verification visit soon, which would help determine the number of students that could be admitted, given the current limitations in facilities.
“We are going to be using facilities provided to us by FUNAAB. Definitely, we do not expect that they will give us all their hostels or lecture rooms. In essence, whatever our carrying capacity will accommodate will determine the number of courses and students we are going to start with,” he added.
Dr. Shanawa commended the management of FMC, noting the hard work and dedication of Medical Director Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu in ensuring the university’s establishment. He also suggested that converting the FMC into a teaching hospital would be a more cost-effective option instead of establishing a new teaching hospital.
Professor Musa-Olomu expressed his full support for the university’s growth, stating, “I’m ready to offer myself in any capacity the university will need my assistance. I’m available.”
He further emphasized the importance of upgrading FMC to a teaching hospital to better serve the university’s needs, hoping that this would elevate both the institution and Nigeria’s medical education.
