UNIBEN Makes History as Over 15,000 Students Gain Admission for 2025/2026

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has admitted 15,077 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, recording the highest student intake in the institution’s history.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, made this known during the university’s matriculation ceremony held in Benin on Thursday.

According to him, the ceremony was particularly important because many of the newly admitted students are the first set of candidates to be enrolled in about 20 newly introduced courses and programmes.

“At this ceremony, a total of 15,077 students are being admitted formally into the various Faculties, Schools, Centres and Programmes,” he said.

Professor Omoregie stressed that all admissions were granted strictly on merit and encouraged the new students to make excellence their guiding principle throughout their stay in the university.

“You have been admitted on merit. Therefore, merit and excellence should be your watchwords in your academic sojourn here at the University of Benin,” Mr Omoregie stated.

He described UNIBEN as a first-generation university and one of the most sought-after institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, noting that for over 55 years, the university has sustained its reputation for quality teaching, learning, and impactful research.

The Vice-Chancellor explained that these values are reflected in the institution’s motto, ‘Knowledge for Service,’ and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to producing graduates who are valuable both to themselves and society.

Professor Omoregie also warned students to stay away from cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and other social vices, emphasizing that the university operates a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct.

He urged the fresh students to remain focused, build positive relationships with lecturers and staff, and make good use of the university’s academic, sporting, and extracurricular facilities.

“Your business here is well spelt out; that is, to learn what you do not know and to unlearn any negative habit that is capable of impeding your progressive aspirations in the university,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor concluded by thanking parents, guardians, and sponsors for trusting the institution with the education of their wards.
