The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has strongly opposed the Federal Government’s recent disbursement formula for the N50 billion allocated to university-based unions.
In a joint statement released in Abuja on Sunday, and signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Mr. Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions expressed deep dissatisfaction with the proposed sharing arrangement.
According to the breakdown, 80% of the funds have been earmarked for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), while the remaining 20% is to be shared among SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). This, JAC described as “grossly unfair, provocative, and unacceptable.”
The unions argue that the allocation undermines the critical contributions of non-teaching staff, who play vital roles in university operations, administration, and development. They warned that the skewed distribution could widen the gap between academic and non-academic staff, and may spark industrial unrest within the university system.
“This is not about union rivalry but about fairness and recognition,” the statement read.
“The government must acknowledge the pivotal role of non-teaching staff in the stability and progress of Nigerian universities.”
JAC urged the Federal Government to reconsider and correct the imbalance immediately, cautioning that the current plan could lead to widespread dissatisfaction.
“The time to correct this injustice is now. A stitch in time saves nine,” the unions warned.
