WAEC and NECO Exams to Go Fully CBT by November 2025, Says Education Minister

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its plan to digitize all national examinations, with a major milestone set for November 2025. According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) will begin conducting computer-based tests (CBT) starting from that date.

Dr. Alausa shared this update during the 2025 Quarterly Citizens and Stakeholders Engagement on the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) in Abuja. He noted that the move is part of a broader effort to eliminate exam malpractice and improve the integrity of Nigeria’s examination process.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, emphasized the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on foreign labor. “We have seen companies hiring 60 per cent of their workforce from abroad. That must change,” she said.

Senator Muntari Dandutse, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, also pledged legislative support for the reforms. He described education as “the heart of national transformation,” adding that the Senate is ready to back initiatives that strengthen the sector.
