Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, has officially admitted 1,805 new students following its 21st matriculation ceremony held on Monday. The students were enrolled across 15 faculties, 63 departments and 48 academic programmes.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Ayuba, described matriculation as an important milestone in the university’s academic calendar. He explained that the event reflects the institution’s vision, mission, values and long-standing traditions, while also helping new students settle into university life.
According to him, the ceremony plays a vital role in building a sense of community among students and staff and prepares fresh undergraduates for the demands of higher education.
“For the students, matriculation marks the beginning of a new chapter in your academic journey.
“It signifies your transition from secondary school to university life, where you affirm your commitment to higher education and embrace the core values and principles of Bingham University,” he said.
Prof. Ayuba urged the newly admitted students to take their studies seriously by attending lectures regularly, obeying university rules and maintaining good conduct. He encouraged them to uphold biblical virtues such as honesty, integrity and respect for both staff and fellow students.

He also called on students to take responsibility for their environment by protecting campus facilities, respecting green spaces and avoiding unethical behaviour, including vandalism and involvement in riots.
The Vice-Chancellor further advised students to seek guidance whenever necessary, noting that the university provides multiple support channels through faculty deans, heads of department, level coordinators and student affairs officers. He added that chaplaincy and counselling services were also available to support students’ wellbeing.
Delivering a lecture titled “Leveraging Legacies for Limitless Impact,” guest speaker Dr. Chibuzo Samuel-Son encouraged the matriculants to believe in themselves, remain disciplined and stay focused despite distractions or challenges. He emphasised the importance of hard work, resilience and building friendships that positively support academic goals.
Some of the newly matriculated students and their parents expressed happiness and gratitude during the event. Ms. Jomani Ofure of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science described her admission as a major personal achievement, while Mr. Ayoyimika Olakunle of the Department of Medicine and Surgery advised prospective undergraduates to remain focused and perform excellently in their examinations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bingham University had earlier graduated over 1,116 students in November, with 82 of them earning first-class honours. (NAN)
