The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Adenike Oladiji, has encouraged newly admitted students to uphold the institution’s long-standing culture of excellence and integrity as they begin their academic journey. She gave the charge during the opening ceremony of the 2025/2026 orientation programme held on Monday, 1st December 2025.
Professor Oladiji reminded the students that they now represent the university in every space they find themselves. She said, “You should from right now begin to see yourself as ambassadors of FUTA wherever you go. As new ambassadors of this great university, you must understand that your conduct, within and outside the campus reflects FUTA’S image; you must therefore uphold the university’s core values of integrity, excellence and innovation. FUTA is well known for academic excellence and discipline. We do not condone any act capable of tarnishing the image of the university. Keep away from any act that can terminate your studentship abruptly. The choices you make today will determine the kind of adult you become tomorrow.”

She also cautioned them against harmful behaviours, stressing the university’s stance on discipline. According to her, “The university has zero tolerance for cultism and cult related activities, indecent dressing, drug abuse and any act of examination misconduct. Let me make it emphatically clear that the penalty for impersonation is expulsion without appeal. Other offences also receive appropriate sanctions.”
Professor Oladiji advised the new students to use social media responsibly and seek support from the Students Affairs Division whenever they face challenges. She assured them that the university management remains committed to providing essential services, ICT infrastructure, scholarship opportunities and recreational facilities that support learning and research.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor David Oke, also addressed the students, urging them to build discipline, dedication and hard work into their daily habits. He reminded them that character counts as much as academic performance. He said, “the award of the university certificate is not only based on academic excellence but also on character. Therefore, you must not be found wanting in good conduct. Your behavior must be acceptable and be in conformity with the university rules and regulations for you to obtain the degree certificate of the university. Build a godly character as much as you build your knowledge in the university. Think thoughtfully, seek guidance and follow the right directives before taking decisions that can either make or mar your student life in the university”.

He encouraged them to always approach the Student Affairs office for emotional, social or academic support, noting that the division is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
The event also featured goodwill messages from the Deans of various schools and a drama titled “Choices” performed by the university’s School of Performing Arts.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
