The Senate of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has elected Professor Princewill Chukwudi Ogbonna as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development).
Professor Ogbonna, who previously served as Dean of the College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (CNREM), was elected during the university’s 261st Regular Senate Meeting held on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
His appointment is however subject to confirmation by the University Governing Council, for a two-year tenure. The Governing Council is chaired by the Pro-Chancellor, Comrade Fidelis Chukwunweike Edeh.
If confirmed, Professor Ogbonna will take over the role from the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, who previously held the same position before her appointment as the university’s seventh Vice-Chancellor in March 2026.
An alumnus of MOUAU, Professor Ogbonna has held several key academic and administrative positions within the institution. These include Acting Director of the Directorate of University Advancement, Acting Head of Environmental Management and Toxicology, and Dean of CNREM.
With his emergence, the university now has an equal representation of male and female principal officers.
The female principal officers are the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Nneoma Elechi Obasi; and the Registrar, Dr. Mrs Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor.
The male principal officers include the Bursar, Chief Ugochukwu Ironkwe; the University Librarian, Professor Isaac Ogbonna; and the newly elected Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Princewill Ogbonna.
