The University of Lagos has issued a new advisory for female students aimed at preventing sexual harassment and rape on campus.
The counselling tips were displayed on a roll-up banner by the Student Affairs Division on Monday.
One of the most prominent messages reads: “Do not shake hands anyhow with any man.”
Other safety tips on the banner advise students not to dress provocatively or mingle carelessly with men.
“Do not stay alone with a man in a hidden place,” the advisory states.
“Do not seek unnecessary favour from men. Do not join to watch pornographic film/pictures.”
The university also warned against accepting intoxicants and urged students to be vigilant when served drinks.
“Learn to say no. One-time sex can cause you pregnancy; if you don’t want it, don’t try it,” the banner reads.
The guidance forms part of counselling efforts to educate female students on personal safety.
The university has recorded several cases of sexual assault and rape in recent years.
In April, a 20-year-old undergraduate told an Ikeja High Court that she was allegedly raped by her lecturer, Dr Samuel Ojogbo.
She testified that the incident occurred on August 22, 2025, in the lecturer’s underground office within the university premises.
The student said the defendant engaged her during an examination and asked her to see him afterwards.
“I said yes, I knew a section better. He told me not to worry and to see him after the exam,” she told the court.
She visited his office twice but did not meet him until the following day during another examination.
“After the exam, I saw him, and he asked me to wait,” she added.
In 2019, the Lagos State government arraigned five UNILAG students for gangraping a 17-year-old student.
