The University of Lagos has a reason to celebrate as one of its students, Peter A. Fagbola, has won first prize at the Huawei Global ICT Competition held in Shenzhen, China, taking home a cash prize of N3.5 million.
Fagbola, a student of the Department of Systems Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and a member of the ABS-CITS Huawei Academy, represented Nigeria as part of Team Nigeria Cloud at the prestigious global contest.
His journey to the world stage began at home. He first emerged as the overall winner in the Cloud and AI Track at the national competition while representing UNILAG, before advancing to the Southern Africa Regional Competition where he and his teammates won first prize, securing Nigeria’s spot at the global finals.
At the global stage in Shenzhen, Team Nigeria Cloud outperformed university teams from across the world to emerge champions, clinching the top prize at one of the most competitive technology contests on the planet.
Reacting to the feat, UNILAG described the achievement as a reflection of Fagbola’s talent and the quality of training available at the institution.
“Mr. Fagbola’s success reflects not only his exceptional talent and dedication but also the quality of mentorship and training provided by UNILAG. His achievement is a testament to the University’s commitment to nurturing innovators who can compete and win at the highest levels,” the university stated.
Following the victory, Fagbola was invited to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja, where he and other awardees were formally honoured.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, congratulated the student on behalf of the university community and wished him greater success in his future endeavours.
The university encouraged other students to draw inspiration from Fagbola’s achievement, describing it as a symbol of what dedication and hard work can produce on the global stage.
“His story embodies the values of self-discovery, perseverance, and global competitiveness that UNILAG champions,” the statement added.
