The Students Forum Reporters

Congratulations on your admission.

You survived the waiting, screamed when you saw your name on the list, and now you’re thinking about clothes, hostel, new friends and independence.

Enjoy the moment. You deserve it.

But before you walk into university shouting “Finally, I’m a university student,” here are 10 things every fresher should know before starting 100 level.

1. Your first few weeks will feel confusing, and that’s normal.
You may not know your department, your lecturers or even where to get your school ID. Everyone around you looks confident, but many of them are just as lost. Give yourself time to settle in.

2. Don’t let the excitement make you forget why you came.
Take pictures, make friends and enjoy your freedom, but remember you came to study and graduate. Enjoy university, but don’t let it consume you.

3. The friends you make will shape your experience.
You’ll meet different kinds of people along the way. Choose a circle that pushes you to attend classes, read, grow and become better, not one that just makes you feel like you belong.

4. Attend your classes.
You’ll hear that some lecturers don’t mark attendance or that nobody goes for certain classes. But going to class often means catching key explanations and exam hints you’d otherwise miss.

5. Don’t wait until exams are close before you start reading.
Nine courses can feel like enemies when exams are a week away. Even an hour or two of study daily keeps you ahead and saves you from last minute panic.

6. Don’t compare your journey with what you see online.
Social media only shows the highlights. Your university experience doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s, and that’s completely fine.

7. Learn to manage your money early.
Between food, transport, data and random cravings, allowance can disappear fast. Budget wisely and separate your feeding money from your enjoyment money.

8. Build relationships with good people, including your lecturers.
Be respectful, ask questions and participate in class. You never know who might recommend you for an opportunity, scholarship or job later on.

9. Don’t be in a hurry to experience everything.
You don’t have to date, party or drink just because everyone around you is doing it. Know your values and stick to your boundaries.

10. Start building yourself beyond your course.
Learn a skill, read books, volunteer and join meaningful communities. Your degree matters, but so does the person you become while earning it.

Dear fresher, you don’t need to have everything figured out on day one.

Take it one day at a time, make mistakes, learn and grow.

Take your academics seriously, but enjoy the little moments too.

Welcome to university. May your first year be filled with wisdom, good people and opportunities you never saw coming.
