A video showing a woman allegedly confronting and assaulting a female student inside a hostel room at the Lagos State University (LASU) has sparked reactions on social media.
The footage, which circulated on Friday, showed the woman grabbing, pushing and repeatedly striking the student during a confrontation in the room.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The identity of the woman and the student involved, along with what triggered the confrontation, remained unclear.
In the video, a person filming the incident could be heard attempting to intervene as the woman continued the confrontation.
“Mommy, please, stop! Mommy!” the student was heard pleading.
At another point, the woman could be heard shouting in Yoruba and ordering the student to sit down, amid the commotion.
The person filming also appeared to challenge the woman, saying, “You must be stupid! What kind of nonsense is that?”
A post by an X user, @AdegbolaJohn3, which shared the video, alleged that the woman had followed her daughter to the university hostel and assaulted her daughter’s roommate.
The user tagged Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU and the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, calling for intervention.
The user wrote, “A woman followed her daughter to her hostel to beat up the roommate of her daughter in LASU. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and LASU VC and the Commissioner of Education must see this.”
The post had attracted about 38,000 views as of Friday and generated reactions from social media users, with some questioning the circumstances that led to the confrontation and calling for better discipline and protection of students in university accommodation.
However, the claims contained in the post could not be independently verified.
Responding to enquiries, LASU said the matter had been addressed by the university, while condemning the incident.
“The matter has been addressed by the University. However, we condemn this in the strongest terms,” the institution said.
The university did not provide details of the circumstances surrounding the incident or disclose the specific measures taken in response.
It also remained unclear whether any disciplinary action had been taken against the woman or any of the students involved.
