The outgoing Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, LASU, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has charged her successor, Prof Ayodeji Badejo, to avoid rushing decisions but remain courageous in taking necessary actions to move the institution forward.
Olatunji-Bello gave the advice during an interactive session with journalists.
She urged Badejo to be patient in leading the university, but stressed that patience should not be mistaken for hesitation in decision making.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State had, last Thursday, named Badejo as the new Vice Chancellor, succeeding Olatunji-Bello, whose five year tenure elapses on September 19.
Badejo, a professor of Guidance and Counselling, is billed to assume office on September 21.
Speaking further, Olatunji-Bello urged the incoming Vice Chancellor to prioritise the welfare of staff and students, describing both as key to the university’s progress.
She expressed confidence in Badejo’s ability to lead the institution, saying the university’s staff would be willing to work with her if she is able to push them and make an impact.
She reiterated the importance of staff and students’ welfare, describing it as central to the institution’s growth.
The 64 year old Badejo obtained a PhD in Guidance and Counselling and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Lagos.
Olatunji-Bello is bowing out of office after five years, highlighting some of her achievements during the tenure.
She noted that LASU is now “the most subscribed university in Nigeria, and the most digitally advanced among its peers.”
She also cited an increase in the university’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, from N3 billion to N13 billion under her administration.
She further spoke of her administration recording a 96 per cent success rate in its first year accreditation exercise, with 31 of the 37 programmes presented securing full accreditation.
