The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Akwa Ibom State, has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to start 12 additional degree programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval was conveyed in an NUC letter dated September 11, 2026, after a successful resource verification visit to the university.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Registrar, Offiongita Nkang. It advised qualified candidates who sat the 2026 UTME and want admission into FUTIA to visit the JAMB Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) and change their course to one of the approved programmes.
“Candidates who did not choose FUTIA as their first-choice university but scored a minimum of 160 can also apply, provided they visit JAMB CAPS and change their first-choice institution to FUTIA.”
The newly approved programmes are B.Eng. Biomedical Engineering, B.Eng. Computer Engineering, B.Eng. Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and B.Eng. Mechatronics Engineering.
Others are B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, B.Sc. Environmental Management Technology and B.Sc. Biotechnology.
The list also includes B.EHS. Environmental Health Science, B.HIM. Health Information Management, B.CHS. Community Health Science and B.Sc. Estate Management.
With this approval, FUTIA now has 36 NUC-approved programmes. The university began its pioneer academic session in 2023/2024.
“The additional programmes reflect the commitment of the pioneer management team and Governing Council towards expanding access to education and strengthening research, teaching, manpower development and community service through innovative academic programmes,” the statement added.
FUTIA also announced that screening for newly admitted candidates is ongoing.
Candidates who chose FUTIA as their first choice should check their admission status on the JAMB portal. Those offered admission are expected to accept the offer, print their JAMB admission letters and report for screening with their relevant documents.
The physical screening holds from Monday, October 12, to Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Takeoff Campus in Ikot Abasi. It starts at 8am daily.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Leo Daniel, expressed delight over the approval. He pledged to create more opportunities and widen access for people in Akwa Ibom State, the South-South region, Nigeria and beyond.
He said FUTIA will keep offering innovative programmes that match the demands of education today and in the future.
