The Majia smartwatch ban is now in force, as the Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences (Majia) prohibits smartwatches and other foreign devices in examination halls.
The measure comes ahead of the university’s forthcoming examinations. It is aimed at curbing examination misconduct and protecting academic integrity.
Wristwatches have long been a tradition among students, used for timekeeping and to complement their dressing. Smartwatches have changed that, since they now do far more than tell the time.
The university said it has noticed a rising trend of examination malpractice, which may be linked to the misuse of smartwatches and other electronic devices. That, it said, made the ban and its strict enforcement necessary.
In a circular signed by the Academic Secretary, Aliyu Abubakar, on behalf of the Registrar, management described the document as an official reminder for students to maintain discipline and comply with all examination regulations.
Students must arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time and present a valid examination card.
The circular was firm on prohibited items.
“Students must not bring unauthorised items into the hall, including mobile phones, smartwatches, electronic devices or any other foreign material.”
On conduct inside the hall, it stated that “Students must maintain absolute silence,” adding that “Talking, signalling, or sharing materials between candidates is strictly forbidden.”
Other prohibited acts include impersonating another candidate, copying, failing to submit answer booklets and obstructing invigilators.
The university also made its position clear on malpractice.
“The University maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards examination malpractice.”
Any student caught will be referred to the disciplinary committee.
“Guilty students will face strict disciplinary action, including result cancellation, rustication, expulsion, or referral to law enforcement agencies where criminal offences such as forgery and impersonation are involved.”
